The Australian Government has appointed Barnaby Joyce as the Deputy Prime Minister and Leader of the Nationals.  Shell has welcomed a new head of scenarios.

The following appointments have been made.

Barnaby Joyce, Deputy Prime Minister & Leader of The Nationals: Prime Minister Scott Morrison has welcomed Barnaby Joyce to the role of Leader of The Nationals and soon to be Deputy Prime Minister.

“I look forward to working closely together to ensure Australia continues its recovery from COVID-19 and the recession it caused,” Morrison said.

“Barnaby and I have a shared passion for ensuring our regions and rural communities thrive.

“I thank Michael McCormack for his dedicated service as Deputy Prime Minister. Michael will continue to be an invaluable member of the National Party, and a passionate advocate for regional and rural communities,” he said.

Morrison advised that the government’s focus remained on two outcomes – protecting lives and protecting livelihoods, as it continues to bolster its vaccine roll out and build on the economic recovery that has led to the creation of almost one million jobs since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Laszlo Varro, Shell head of scenarios team: Laszlo Varro, the chief economist of the Paris-based International Energy Agency (IEA), is joining Shell as its head of scenarios team, following Jeremy Bentham announcing his retirement.

Varro, who has worked at the IEA since 2011, became the Agency’s Chief Economist at the start of 2016.

On a LinkedIn post, Varro said: “All good things come to an end eventually. After a beautiful decade at the IEA mapping the road for the energy system it is time to don a hard hat, grab the steel and return to the industry to try to build it”.

By joining Shell I enter a company that embarked on a transformation deeper and more profound than anything in its long history. The conclusion of the journey will be a Shell that is an indispensable pillar of a secure and efficient net zero energy system, working with consumers and governments, supplying low carbon energy in various physical forms and operating carbon removal facilities,” he said.

“A lot of hard work and no doubt tough challenges are ahead, but Shell has amazing technical capabilities and even more importantly amazing people whom I’m greatly honored to join. Let the adventure begin.”
