AWE confirms extension of Waitsia-4

AWE is the operator of production licences L1 and L2 in the northern Perth Basin, Western Australia, one of the state’s major gas producing regions for more than 50 years.

The company’s preliminary analysis of wireline log and pressure data from the Waitsia-4 appraisal well has confirmed the eastern extension by encountering strong gas shows across a 150 m gross interval, including the Kingia and High Cliff Sandstone reservoir targets.

The well was drilled to 3,744 m measured depth below rotary table (MDRT), through all primary and secondary targets.

The Kingia reservoir was penetrated very close to prognosis of 3,379 m MRDT.

Strong gas shows were encountered in Kingia and High Cliff Sandstone, as well as minor shows in Irwin River Coal Measures.

The well has been cased and suspended for future production, with preparations underway to flow test Waitsia-2, Waitsia-4 and Waitsia-4 early in Q4 of 2017.

“Both Waitsia-3 and Waitsia-4 appraisal wells have significantly exceeded our pre-drill expectations,” said AWE CEO and Managing Director David Briggs.

“The substantial thickness of the Kingia reservoir, combined with the exceptional porosity, net pay and low levels of total inerts, continues to position the Waitsia Field as the largest onshore conventional gas discovery in 40+ years.

“The combined data from the Waitsia-3 and Waitsia-4 will allow a complete re-evaluation of the extended Waitsia Field and we anticipate a further upgrade to reserves and contingent resources in the first half of the 2018 Financial Year,” said Mr Briggs.

Discovered in 2014, the Waitsia Field has the capability to supply the domestic market with 100 TJ/d from conventional reservoirs for more than 10 years.

AWE is the operator and has a 50 per cent stake in L1 and L2, along with joint venture partners Origin Energy (50 per cent).
